Overview

Located on the charming street of Waratah in Haberfield, Hungry Grasshopper Cafe offers a genuine local experience for both coffee lovers and brunch enthusiasts. This cozy spot balances a welcoming community vibe with quality food and expertly crafted beverages, making it a go-to destination for anyone looking to enjoy a relaxed morning or midday break in Sydney’s inner west.

The cafe’s culinary focus shines through its well-curated all-day breakfast and lunch menu. Highlights like the Eggs Benedict with smoked salmon and the Waratah Cheeseburger stand out for their thoughtful ingredients and flavor balance. The breakfast burrito and the weekend specials, such as the French toast and corn fritters, provide appealing variety without overwhelming complexity. Free range eggs prepared to your liking and dishes like the special mushroom sauté showcase a commitment to fresh, honest food.

Hungry Grasshopper’s coffee offerings are a consistent crowd-pleaser, praised repeatedly by patrons for their rich profiles and perfect temperature. The flat white and cappuccino maintain a delicate harmony of bitterness and creaminess, while the large mocha and iced coffee (with a twist of honey) add a refreshing dimension. Their use of Allpress coffee beans highlights a strong connection to quality sourcing and barista skill, which coffee aficionados will appreciate.

The atmosphere complements the menu perfectly. With a warm, snug interior and carefully chosen background music, the cafe invites guests to linger, whether catching up with friends or reading the daily paper over their meal. While the space can feel limited during peak times—where larger tables sometimes dominate smaller groups—it still fosters a welcoming, community-oriented setting. Outdoor seating is available but would benefit from heaters during colder months to extend comfort.

Service here earns high marks for being approachable and efficient, with owners and staff alike engaging warmly with customers. This personal touch elevates the experience, making it clear that passion fuels the operation. The cafe’s friendly environment suits a broad audience—from solo visitors savoring a quiet coffee to families and friends gathering for a casual brunch.

Although the lunch menu could use small improvements, such as adding sides like chips or salad to the burger offerings, the overall quality and taste make up for it. Parking near the cafe varies but is generally manageable, depending on timing.

Hungry Grasshopper Cafe is an essential visit for those who cherish well-made coffee and straightforward, flavorful food in a relaxed, approachable space. It’s a place where simplicity meets care, nestled in the heart of Haberfield’s vibrant café culture.

Visited Sunday 9th October Lunch orders: Chicken Burger, Waratah Burger, Bacon & Egg Large Roll. Two hot cappuccinos and an iced coffee. Both Burger buns are soft and easy to eat. The grilled chicken is tasty and the beef patty is meaty. Great taste and flavour. Downside for the Chicken Burger is the added Peri Peri Sauce wasn't consistent throughout. The Bacon & Egg Roll, the buns were similar to the burgers and contained double the bacon and egg. And we were surprised that for a lunch menu, there weren't even any included sides, chips/fries or salad or maybe roast potatoes, either would have been good. The strong cappuccino was full of flavour and not too Milky. The iced coffee had ice cream and honey (the latter, something different) was good, but the cup size for the iced coffee was a bit small versus the price being charged. Not enough indoor seating, too many big tables inside. We as a party of three wanted to sit inside but a young couple sat and held a bigger table. Yes, today was icy cold outside. Maybe having heaters outside would be a great addition. Service was great and pleasant. Very efficient waiting by the staff. The menu was placed near the door entrance, so we didn't notice it at all, until another customer pointed it out to us.

My husband has been raving about the coffee here for a good year but today was my first visit. We were lucky to snag a table for the breakfast rush - it’s a very popular local cafe. I ordered the eggs Benedict with salmon. He chose the brekkie burger. Coffee was perfection - great heat, great bean. Probably the best in Haberfield. Our meals were yummy. Parking can be tricky depending on your timing. For a couple, brekkie with drinks was around $50 which is reasonable in Sydney at the moment. Great service, great ambience. I love that they have the daily paper too - perfection for a morning sit down.

Lovely local community cafe. Friendly, prompt service, easy listening background music and plenty of on street parking. It was a cool, wet day but it was nice and snug inside, even with the front window open, which let is crisp fresh air. Coffee had a discernible bitterness, but was well-made. I had poached eggs, sautéed mushrooms and wilted spinach which was reasonably priced at $20. Overall, a great cafe for brunch and a chat with friends.

Try this cafe for the first time, and very impressive by the food quality, friendly services and warm environment there. Heartfelt for their provision of small blanket for the outdoor seats during the cool morning. The ham attached to the bunny eggs is excellent too.

Great service, delicious burgers (with crispy grilled cheese!!) and dog treats for the puppers. Loved the hot chocolate and the coffee was decent. Make sure you get in early for the Portuguese tarts as it had run out by the time we went at 12:30pm. Even woolly blankets for the outside seats, which was a lifesaver. We'll be back
